Caruthers District Fair
October 1, 2013. Over the weekend, we joined up with some friends at the Caruthers District Fair. This is real America, through and through. Corn dogs, live country music, chicken pot pies, rib dinners, cotton candy, rickety rides, tests of strength and skill, junior motocross races, pie and jam contests, quilt shows, cows, pigs, goats, sheep, you name it. Every local church had a dinner special under a huge open tent. There were, what we call in Germany, "beer tables" as far as the eye could see. The kids were wide-eyed with excitement and the parents were lined up to buy more ride tickets. There were honest-to-goodness cowboys, decked out with boots and belt buckles and felt hats, and the later it got, the more crowded it became. Our kids got on a ride that I thought for sure was going to be the death of them, but somehow they survived the treachery and lived to tell about it.
